            About

Mulugeta Tafesse, an Ethiopian artist with a remarkable journey and a unique artistic vision. Born in 1960 in Ethiopia, he has established himself in Antwerp and gained international recognition for his intriguing and profound paintings.

His journey began in Addis Ababa, where he graduated from the art academy and taught painting at the University of Addis Ababa. During the communist regime in Ethiopia, he had the opportunity to expand his artistic horizons in Bulgaria. In 1992, he found a new home in Antwerp, where he continued his education at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts and earned a degree. His time with Dr. Hugo Heyrman in Antwerp made a lasting impression on him and significantly influenced his work.

His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and cultural centers worldwide, including the Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp and the University of La Laguna in Tenerife. Collaborations with institutions like the Goethe Institut and the Alliance Française have strengthened his connection to his Ethiopian roots and brought his work to an international audience. Despite many exhibitions, he remains modest about his success and appreciates the support of his fellow artists and collectors.

Mulugeta's paintings reflect a rich mix of figurative and abstract elements, representing the world as he sees and interprets it. He paints portraits of friends, himself, and scenes from everyday life, often inspired by newspaper photos and his own photography. The influence of his time in Tenerife is evident in his work, especially in his fascination with naked bodies and sunbathing figures.

Although his subjects are universal, he remains true to his Ethiopian and African origins, highlighting mythologies, culture, and the history of Ethiopia while also exploring global themes such as migration and urban architecture. His paintings remind us of the importance of the socio-historical and political context in our daily lives.

In addition to his artistic practice, Mulugeta is an important theorist and art historian. His lectures and publications have contributed to the development of the contemporary art scene in Ethiopia and beyond. With a PhD in art theory, he continues to inspire new generations of artists.
